Sergei Shoigu: Vietnam is an important strategic partner for Russia in Asia Pacific

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is an important strategic partner for Russia in terms of Asia-Pacific security, Russian Minister of Defence General of the Army Sergei Shoigu said at a meeting with Vietnam's Minister of National Defence General Ngo Xuan Lich on 25 April.

"We see Vietnam as a strategic ally and a reliable friend of long standing. Vietnam is an important partner in the sphere of Asia-Pacific security," Sergei Shoigu said, adding that maintaining close and confidential relations with Vietnam is a priority in Russia's foreign policy.

Sergei Shoigu said they were satisfied with the consistent and productive dialogue between the Russian and Vietnamese defence ministries and also with their close cooperation in a number of areas, such as military education and naval activities.

General Ngo Xuan Lich expressed hope for the further strengthening of cooperation between Vietnam and Russia. He thanked his Russian colleague for the invitation to the 5th Moscow Conference on International Security, which will be held on 27-28 April, and the ASEAN — Russia meetings of defence ministers.
